March 2010

March was a very busy month for all of us. Cathy went to do service work with the church group to Baldwin, LA. They stayed on the Sager/Brown campus and she unloaded trucks with catastrophe relief supplies, worked in the warehouse assembling health kits to be sent out globally for catastrophe relief and assembled school bags. The experience of working along side an 89 year old man from Florida that still competes in triathalons and meeting people from a variety of states that were there to serve others, proved to be life changing. The UMCOR trip also included a visit to the 9th ward to see homes that were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina and still in ruins as well as new growth and volunteers still helping people rebuild their lives and homes.

Danielle and the other musicians at the High School performed at the Solo and Ensemble competition in Downers Grove. Dani played solo piano and violin as well as in a duet and quintet on violin.

We did a little more work on Dani's El Camino. We took Molly for a ride, added new tailgate support cables and started removing trim, prepping for bodywork.

Bowling season was over, but award night remained. Dani was surprised to be given the coach's award for JV and we were very proud!

DAPLE performed at The House in DeKalb.

The High School Orchestra performed with Dani as the Concertmaster.

Dani also performed with a piano solo at NIU. Here are a few of the other students from Dani's teacher.

We rounded out the month with a drive to Texas for spring break.
Day 1...

We loaded the trunk to the top, picked up Paige and headed out. The drive through Illinois was kinda boring! You can see the results. We did finally make it to St. Louis for lunch. Dani drove after that and we ended up in Memphis. We had a nice dinner at The Pig on Beale, wandered around Beale Street and then continued on our way.

Day 2....

After waking up in Texarkana, we headed out for Dallas and lunch at Sonny Brian's BBQ.  Friday adternoon we ended up at Steph and Brandon's place in Austin, just in time for the annual South by Southwest Music Fest. We went for dinner at a nice mexican restaurant then saw Cheap Trick in concert in the park. We walked and shopped 6th street before going back to Steph and Brandon's for the night.

Day 3....

Saturday morning we went down to the University book store and then lunch at Rudy's. This place was EXCELLENT! With full bellies, we said our good-byes and left for San Antonio.

Day 4....

The weather was great for explorimg the Riverwalk. We were there just in time for the Tejano music fest. You would think that they planned all of this for us.

Day 5.....

After our last morning in San Antonio, our next stop was Galveston.

Day 6....

The weather was a little cool but very nice. We stayed at the San Luis resort. You can see it in the background behind Cathy. The pilings are whats left of a fishing pier that was destroyed by Hurricane Ike in 2008. Dani and Paige had fun on the beach.

Day 7....

Our last full day in Galveston was cloudy, but we made the best of it. Lunch at Salsa's, a little exploring, checking out more hurricane damage, and even a little Geocaching. There are also a few pics from the pool area at the hotel.

Day 8....

Time to leave Galveston. We saw some fun signs on the way out.

Day 9....

Back to Memphis and a tour of the Rock n Roll museum and Corky's BBQ. Nine days and 2980 miles. What a great trip!
